ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Thauvin could be an ideal target for Liverpool given the potential financial restrictions they could face in the summer window. Liverpool are on course to miss out on Champions League football and have already reportedly felt the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on their finances, which could mean that there is not a huge war chest of money to be used in the coming months. This means that a free transfer of Thauvin’s quality could be exactly what Liverpool need in order to strengthen their squad whilst not breaking the bank on transfer fees.

The 10-assist forward is a proven quantity after a number of impressive seasons with Marseille in Ligue 1. He has scored 86 and assisted 61 in 279 appearances for the French club, whilst he also made 16 appearances during a spell with Newcastle in his younger days. He has eight goals and 10 assists in all competitions for Marseille this season, proving that he could be an additional goalscoring and creative threat for Liverpool.

Along with his eye-catching statistics for Marseille, Thauvin has experience of winning at the highest level. The 28-year-old was part of France’s squad in 2018 and won the World Cup, with 10 caps to his name for his country to date. This shows that he is an experienced and quality option that Liverpool can get for free, which could make him a very astute signing.
