Arsenal have hijacked Tottenham Hotspur’s move for Eberechi Eze with the Crystal Palace midfielder set to move to the Emirates.

Spurs had been in negotiations with Palace over a deal worth around £60m for Eze. Thomas Frank’s side had been confident of concluding a move for the England international, but a late approach from Arsenal has seen the transfer collapse.

Arsenal expressed interest in Eze earlier in the window and returned this week with a fresh approach. The Gunners have reached a verbal agreement with both Crystal Palace and the player, with Eze choosing a move to Arsenal over Tottenham.

The transfer will represent a significant boost for Arsenal, who have seen Kai Havertz sidelined with a knee issue.

Eze spent time in the Arsenal academy as a youngster and was a childhood fan of the Gunners before beginning his professional career at Queens Pak Rangers. Arsenal’s approach proved persuasive with Eze snubbing North London rivals Tottenham to join Mikel Arteta’s side.

Queens Park Rangers will also receive a substantial windfall with the Championship side holding a 15% sell-on clause. QPR are entitled to 15% of the profit made by Palace, who signed Eze for around £17m in 2020.

The midfielder has since scored 40 goals in 169 games for the Eagles, including the winner in last season’s FA Cup final against Manchester City. That goal secured Palace their first-ever major trophy and a place in Europe for the first time.

Eze will not be included in the Crystal Palace squad to face Fredrikstad in the Europa Conference League tonight as he completes his move to Arsenal.
