Real Madrid 5-3 Atletico Madrid: Player Ratings | Spanish Super Cup

Real Madrid took on Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals, hoping to take revenge for their only loss of the season – coming against the derby rivals.

Atletico’s form promised this to be a great game, and they did not disappoint, scoring early on through Mario Hermoso, courtesy of an Antoine Griezmann corner.

Madrid equalised through a corner of their own, with Antonio Rudiger scoring, before Ferland Mendy put them 2-1 up with a clever flick inside the box.

Griezmann found the net for Atleti’s second with a brilliant solo goal, before an own goal from Rudiger in the second half helped Diego Simeone’s men retake the lead.

Daniel Carvajal came up clutch seven minutes later, finding the top corner off ricocheted attempts from Vinicius and Jude Bellingham.

The game reached extra-time eventually, but neither time was able to find a way through, especially with Atletico sitting back with six defenders on the pitch.

Madrid did what they do best, though, scoring a goal in extra-time through Joselu, who forced an own goal from Savic.

Brahim Diaz added insult to injury as he scored in injury time for Madrid from near the half-way line when Oblak had pushed upfield.

Kepa: 6.5

Made an insane save in the first-half, but conceded from a corner that led from it. Should have perhaps done better with the first goal, and was clearly at fault for the third, missing the ball completely as it rebounded in off Rudiger.

Daniel Carvajal: 10

Kept Lino on backfoot for most of the game, covering ground brilliantly on both ends. Assisted Mendy’s goal with a lovely pass into the box, but then missed an open chance, hitting it right at Oblak. More than made up for it with a sensational finish for the third goal, and then creating the fourth. Unplayable tonight.

Antonio Rudiger: 7

Scored a brilliant header to equalise, but defended poorly for Griezmann’s goal later in the second half. Could not have done anything about the own goal. Overall a decent performance, largely boosted by the goal.

Nacho: 6.5

Cannot be blamed for either goal and was brilliant in possession, neatly distributing the ball from the back.

Ferland Mendy: 8

Llorente vs Mendy was far from interesting as either refused to properly go against each other. The Frenchman did score a brilliant goal, though, flicking in a cross from Carvajal.

Federico Valverde: 8

An absolute engine with and without the ball, Valverde kept the Madrid midfield ticking today as he made some excellent recoveries and created a couple of chances as well.

Aurlien Tchouameni: 6

Basic run-of-the-mill performance from Tchouameni. Passed the ball around well, and defended well on occasions. Was also caught out by Rodrigo de Paul and Griezmann a few times.

Luka Modric: 7.5

Got the assist for Rudiger’s goal and circulated the ball brilliantly, changing flanks whenever he could, and controlling the tempo of the game.

Jude Bellingham: 6.5

Was not as involved in the attack as much as Madrid fans would have wanted, but did a decent job of running around and showing up for the ball in the middle third when Atletico packed the midfield.

Rodrygo: 4

Missed the easiest chance of the game when he was open in front of the goal, and could not impact the game much before or after that. Was also largely responsible for Hermoso’s goal with very poor marking.

Vinicius: 8

Was having a fairly silent game for the most part, but came alive in the second half, starting with creating a stellar chance for Carvajal, that was not converted. Did brilliantly in extra time as well, attractive pressure and finding solutions.

SUBSTITUTES:

Toni Kroos: 7.5

Kroos did what Kroos does best, control the game unlike anyone else, and put Madrid on the front foot with his excellent decision-making int the middle third.
