Erling Haaland has been left “very sad” after his injury setback this week, his father has revealed in a new interview.
The 22 year-old withdrew from international commitments this week with a groin injury sustained during the 6-0 win over Vincent Kompany’s Burnley in the FA Cup quarter-finals last weekend.
Haaland has continued to stay away from the UK as he takes advantage of the granted period of time off during the international break to rest up after an intense start to the calendar year with Manchester City.
The problem concerning the Norway international came as a surprise to many, with the Manchester City striker seemingly exiting the pitch after scoring his sixth hat-trick of the season without any problem.
That element of surprise is a feeling that is shared by the player’s father Alfie Haaland as he explained, while speaking during an exclusive interview with Norwegian media station TV 2 Sport, that initial assessments had highlighted “something not good”.
“It was very surprising. I knew nothing,” the former Manchester City man said. “He (Erling Haaland) called me and said that they had taken some pictures and found something that was not good.”
While Erling Haaland’s fitness and recovery is of course the main priority right now, as stressed by Alfie Haaland, the Norway international has been left “very sad” by his most recent injury setback, that has thrown his availability for the Premier League clash against Liverpool into doubt.
“I both believed and hoped that he would play (for Norway against Spain and Georgia). Everything is relative. He would very much like to have played these two international matches, but now it won’t be like that.”
Alfie Haaland continued, “He must prioritise his health, try to get his body back in place. Based on the assumptions, he is doing well, but he is very sad.”
“First and foremost, it is the national team that makes the decision, but they cooperate, of course. They must have as much knowledge as possible about this and of course ask the doctors and physios at Manchester City. Then they come up with something together.”
It has also been confirmed that Erling Haaland has visited Manchester City’s partner hospital based in Barcelona this week for further tests and assessments on the problem, while a club physio has joined him in Marbella as he continues to recover.
Whether or not Haaland will be available for Manchester City’s return to action on April 1st remains an unknown, with Liverpool being the visitors to the Etihad Stadium in a Premier League title clash.
Pep Guardiola is not due to face the media until March 31st, when the Catalan coach will provide his thoughts on the clash against Jurgen Klopp’s side, as well as provide an update on all of his City players following the international break.
