The Premier League is set to carry on following lengthy discussions at a shareholders meeting on Monday afternoon.
It came on the back of a weekend which saw more than half of the slated fixtures postponed due to concerns over rising coronavirus cases.
Although there had been suggestions that a ‘circuit break’ stoppage may be required, the league confirmed that they intend to continue playing wherever it is safely possible.
That is after a ‘large majority’ of clubs voted in favour of doing so throughout the festive period.
However, it does come with the caveat that if cases continue to rise and lead to further postponements, it could lead to an enforced stoppage in January.
Some clubs were in favour of moving the gameweek 20 round of fixtures on December 28-30 to a later date but this was ultimately shot down due to the complexity and risk of attempting to implement it.
Although stopping the season entirely was also discussed, a report in The Athletic claims that no club voted in favour of that move.
There was no formal vote between all 20 clubs, with the Premier League instead listening to all concerns and suggestions put forward before ultimately opting to continue the playing schedule.
