Wrexham are amongst the clubs touting for the signature of Rangers midfielder Tom Lawrence upon the expiry of his contract this summer.

The Wrexham-born Wales international has made over 300 EFL appearances, most recently with Derby County, before joining the Scottish giants in 2022.

According to The Daily Mail, Phil Parkinson’s side are among a gamut of Championship clubs vying to acquire the 31 year old, facing reported competition from West Bromwich Albion, Coventry City, Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough.

With the Red Dragons amongst the clubs interested in Tom Lawrence, Football League World spoke to Wrexham fan pundit Liam Grice on whether or not the midfielder would be a good signing for the North Wales side, or whether younger, up-and-coming acquisitions were needed.

“I don’t really think there’s really any doubting his ability - he wouldn’t be at Rangers if he wasn’t a good footballer by the stretch of the imagination.” Grice told FLW.

“He is a bit on the older side and the only other thing that puts me off from signing him is that we don’t really play with out-and-out wingers.”

“He can play down the middle, we’ve seen him do it for Wales and a few times for Rangers, so if that’s where he was going to play, he’s a definite upgrade on what we’ve got there and I think he can definitely make an impact.”

“I think it all depends on if we go up or not, because I’m not necessarily sure he’d drop down to League One from playing in the Scottish Prem, but the lure of playing for his hometown club could prove too much for him.”

“But I think he’d be a very solid addition, he’s definitely the quality of player we need to be looking for, there’s a just a few question marks surrounding his age, and whether he’d fit into Phil Parkinson’s system.”

Tom Lawrence transfer to Wrexham makes sense for club and player alike

While question marks remain over his age and how he would slot into Phil Parkinson’s system, Tom Lawrence would represent a smart and ambitious signing for Wrexham.

The club have shown a clear willingness to recruit experienced, high-profile names in recent seasons - signings that reflect both their Hollywood ownership and their upward trajectory through the English football pyramid. Lawrence fits that mould perfectly.

Whether Wrexham secure promotion to the Championship or remain in League One, the addition of a player with Lawrence’s pedigree - over 300 EFL appearances, top-level experience with Rangers, and international caps for Wales - would be a strong statement of intent.

His ability to play centrally and out wide adds versatility to a squad that may soon need to adapt to a higher division.

There’s also a sentimental pull to the deal. A return to his hometown club at this stage in his career would offer a romantic full-circle moment for the 31-year-old, potentially allowing him to play a key role in Wrexham’s ongoing resurgence while winding down his career on home soil.
