The uncertainty at Hillsborough may create an opening for one of the many teams who are keen on the 33-year-old.
Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith is a player of interest to Wrexham, Blackpool and MK Dons, as well as other teams in the EFL.
Instability is running rife at the Steel City club, with uncertainty over their footballing and financial futures. The latter issue is leading to a slow dismantling of the first-team squad.
Wednesday have been pushed towards selling players because of their lack of available funds, which has left a number of their players without wages for the past two months. Several of them have enacted their right to hand in their notices to the club, one of them being Josh Windass, according to FLW's sister publication GiveMeSport.
Anthony Musaba has already left the club to join Turkish club Samsunspor, with fellow winger Djeidi Gassama soon set to follow as he is destined for a move to Rangers.
The vultures are circling over Wednesday's carcass, and a new piece of flesh, 33-year-old Smith, is being eyed by two clubs in the EFL.
The striker is a target that the Owls' Championship rivals Wrexham and heavy League Two favourites MK Dons are looking at, according to The Star.
The Hollywood-owned Red Dragons have had a long-standing interest in Smith, as per the Sheffield outlet. Wednesday batted back proposals from them in both of last season's transfer windows, and they are now back to try and pick off the veteran goalscorer.
Blackpool are monitoring the football league stalwart's situation too, as per The Star. Tangerines head honcho, and former Wednesday manager, Steve Bruce, has already brought in one member of the 24/25 Owls alumni - Michael Ihiekwe.
MK are managed by Paul Warne, who's familiar with Smith due to the time they spent together at Rotherham United. They have shown great ambition already in this window, signing a number of players who are above the requisite level of the fourth tier in an attempt to escape its grasp.
Bolton Wanderers' top scorer was poached away from them by Warne for a reported fee of £800,000. They have also brought in Nathaniel Mendez-Laing from Derby County, who signed the winger while the former Millers boss was in charge, and Stockport County midfielder Will Collar.
Smith still has one year left on his Wednesday deal, which doesn't give the club too much protection against any bids that may come in from one of the teams that are interested in him. According to The Star, that list of keen sides spans wider than just the aforementioned trio.
Despite struggling to retain a consistent spot in Danny Rohl's starting XI last season, the striker still managed to bag eight goals and helped others to score on four occasions.
