Carlton Palmer believes that Millwall are right to pose an interest in Macaulay Langstaff, and that he can continue his form in the Championship.

Pundit Carlton Palmer believes that Millwall are correct to show an interest in Notts County's star striker, Macaulay Langstaff.

The 27-year-old has been in red-hot form for the Magpies since joining in 2022. Langstaff has scored 69 goals in 91 games over the course of the last two years, setting the record for most goals in a National League season in the 2022/23 season with 41.

However, his scoring ability has seen an increase in interest from higher divisions, with Millwall reportedly sending an offer to Notts County, as per Football Insider.

Langstaff is yet to play above League Two level, but his natural ability has been noticed by Lions manager Neil Harris. Speaking to London News Online, he said: "I'm fully aware of what has been written in the press and leaked online. But I am not prepared to talk about other club's players in detail.

"What I will say is I'm fully aware of the player, having started last season in League Two and seen a lot of the player at the start of the season and watched a lot of National League football the season before. I'm fully aware of his attributes."

Former England international and current pundit is fully behind Millwall targeting the striker, acknowledging his prowess and the difference he could make to the Lions in the Championship next season.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Palmer said: "I'm surprised nobody else has had a go for Notts County striker Macaulay Langstaff. I know he's played in the lower parts of the league, but his record is phenomenal. He got 28 goals for Notts County last season in League Two, winning the Golden Boot, and that's some going when they only finished thirteenth.

"A year earlier, the 27-year-old broke the record for the most goals in a season in the National League, scoring 41 in 45 games. Before that, he scored 33 goals in 61 games in non-league football.

"For me, I think he's worth a bit. With his conversion rate at the moment, I still think he'll score at a Championship level, certainly, so this would be a fantastic signing for Millwall. "As I said, I think he will score goals up to Championship level, and we'll have to wait and see his chances.

"His ratio of converting his shots on target and getting in the box is quite phenomenal. He's 27, so he's at the right age, he's strong, he's mobile, he gets in behind, and so I think it would be a great bit of business for Millwall for next season."

Millwall should make Langstaff a priority

With Milwall's struggle for goals last season, a striker is definitely the number one target on Harris' list this summer. The Lions scored just 45 goals in the Championship last time out, the third lowest in the division.

Zian Flemming top scored for Millwall in 2023/24 with eight goals in all competitions, while Kevin Nisbet and Tom Bradshaw failed to reach 10 goals between them.

If Langstaff does make the move to The Den, then Harris will finally have that 15-goal a-season striker that he needs to stave off relegation and push back up the league towards the play-off places.

Nevertheless, Notts County will not want to let go of their star, and will be chasing a competitive fee if they are to sell up. But, with the Magpies falling away from the play-offs last year in League Two, and with Langstaff 27-years-old, he may find that now is the right time to move on before his career stagnates in the lower divisions.
