Wolverhampton Wanderers have firmly planted themselves among five European clubs reportedly bidding for Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios, according to a report by GE. The West Midlands side are said to have made a “formal offer” for the Colombian international, who starred at the recent FIFA Club World Cup. Rios’ dynamic displays in the United States appear to have elevated his stock significantly, with head coach Vitor Pereira reportedly keen on the 25-year-old.
Rios’ form in Brazil has only enhanced his reputation. “Manchester United had been monitoring his progress” earlier this summer, according to GIVEMESPORT sources, although they are not named among those to have submitted offers. Benfica appear to be the frontrunners, while AS Roma are believed to have withdrawn from contention. Alongside Wolves, Nottingham Forest, Everton, FC Porto and Zenit have all tabled formal proposals to Palmeiras.
It is reported that the asking price for Rios is in the region of €30 million (£26 million). A combative and athletic midfielder with strong dribbling ability and endurance, Rios brings attributes suited to the Premier League. However, one complication for Wolves is the player’s desire to prioritise Champions League football.

“Rios, described as a ‘freak athlete’, would be a similar acquisition to that of Andre and Joao Gomes,” players who also made the transition from Brazil to Wolves. Their growing partnership in midfield could be transformed into one of the league’s most impressive trios if Rios arrives. That is contingent, however, on Wolves retaining Andre, who has “reportedly emerged as a Juventus target.”
Vitor Pereira knows the value of continuity. “He will be eager to keep hold of the 24-year-old and build on Premier League survival by swooping for one of the Club World Cup’s standout performers.” Rios, with his mix of bite and brilliance, could be the ideal summer statement to elevate Wolves’ ambitions.
This is the type of transfer that gets fans buzzing. Richard Rios might not be a household name in Europe yet, but the way he tore through midfield lines at the Club World Cup showed he has the grit and grace to thrive in England. Wolves supporters have become used to smart scouting in South America, and the links to Rios fit that tradition perfectly.
The idea of pairing him with Joao Gomes and Andre is mouth-watering. That trio screams energy, bite, and technique. The Premier League demands players who can cope with the pace and physicality, and Rios looks like he’s built for it. “Freak athlete” isn’t a phrase used lightly in football circles, so it’s telling just how highly some rate him.
But there is a tinge of concern too. If Champions League football is a sticking point, Wolves might lose out again to one of the big guns or Benfica. And with Juventus sniffing around Andre, could it be that this whole plan unravels before it begins?
Still, the club’s intent is clear. Formal bids are not speculative. They’re ambitious. If Pereira can pull this one off, fans will rightly believe that this team is building for more than just survival.
