Salah’s Future, Carragher’s Comments, and Liverpool’s Contract Puzzle

Jamie Carragher has never been one to shy away from an opinion. His latest remarks on Mohamed Salah’s contract situation, aired during The Overlap’s Fan Debate, have stirred the pot once again. This time, though, they come with a level of certainty that suggests Liverpool have done their part in trying to retain their star forward.

Liverpool’s Offer and the Saudi Question

Speculation over Salah’s future has been relentless, but Carragher is adamant that the club have already made their move. “Do not believe he [Salah] hasn’t been offered a contract. I can actually assure you he has been offered a contract,” he stated, countering claims that Liverpool are dragging their feet.

The suggestion that Salah might head to Saudi Arabia has also been a recurring theme. With the Saudi Pro League eager to lure Europe’s elite, and Salah’s age profile fitting the trend of high-profile late-career moves, the prospect seems plausible. Yet Carragher dismisses this outright, insisting “he’s too driven, he’s too much of a winner. I think Salah can go until he’s 37, 38. He can play.”

While the Egyptian forward has kept his cards close to his chest, it remains to be seen whether he shares Carragher’s long-term vision of his career. At 32, this could be his last major contract, and if Liverpool’s offer doesn’t meet his expectations, he could still explore alternatives.

Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold – Contract Concerns Mount

Salah isn’t the only key figure with an uncertain future. Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also in the final months of their deals, leaving Liverpool in a precarious position.

Carragher voiced his concern about the trio’s potential exits, stating, “I’d be gutted if Liverpool didn’t sign them, but I’d also be looking at them like, why haven’t you signed? The team is made for them, it is loved, where are they gonna go?”

He raises an interesting point. While contract negotiations are often about leverage, Liverpool remains a club built around these players. If not Anfield, then where? Few European clubs would offer them the same platform and wages—especially in a financial climate where the Premier League holds the economic upper hand.

Legacy or New Horizons?

For Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold, this decision is about more than just money. It’s about legacy. Liverpool’s new era under Arne Slot is still an unknown quantity albeit an amazing season so far. Do they stay and help define the next chapter, or do they test themselves elsewhere?

Carragher’s comments may ruffle feathers, but his concerns are valid. If these key figures leave, Liverpool’s rebuild becomes significantly tougher. The coming months will be crucial, and while contract offers may be on the table, whether they are signed is another question entirely.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, this is an unsettling moment. The idea of losing one, let alone all three, of Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold is hard to fathom. They are more than just great players; they are the pillars of Liverpool’s modern success.

Carragher’s claim that Salah has been offered a contract should provide some relief, but the real question is: what are the terms? If it’s a short-term deal, that might explain any hesitation. Salah has earned the right to a contract on his terms, yet Liverpool also have to be pragmatic—especially when considering his age.

For Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold, the concerns are different. Van Dijk is still among the best defenders in the world, but at 32, how many more years is he at his peak? Alexander-Arnold, on the other hand, should be a no-brainer for Liverpool. He is the embodiment of what it means to be a Scouser in this team, and allowing him to leave would be a catastrophe.

This situation needs resolving quickly. The longer it drags on, the more uncertainty creeps in. Slot has inherited a team in transition, and without these leaders, the challenge becomes even greater. If Liverpool want to maintain their place at the top, keeping these three should be non-negotiable.
