The Los Angeles Galaxy entered June having played half of their 34 regular season games. Of those 17 games, they only won once.
A tough schedule in the month of May did the team some favors. Five of the seven games were close as the differential was one goal.
Aside from the 7-0 dismantling at the hands of the New York Red Bulls, the LA Galaxy played teams closer. They unfortunately managed to lose 1-0 against Sporting Kansas City where an own goal was the difference maker against another MLS Western Conference foe at the bottom of the standings.
The LA Galaxy held a 2-0 lead over the Philadelphia Union going into halftime back on May 14. The Union have been one of the best teams in the league all season.
Knowing that the LA Galaxy have held their own and improved, looking at June gives this team hope. While qualifying for the playoffs for a second year in a row is almost out of the question, ending this month unbeaten is not as much of a stretch.
The 2024 MLS Cup Finals winners had a grueling month of March. In addition to five MLS games (with three on the road), the Los Angeles Galaxy also had to play a pair of games against Herediano.
In March, the LA Galaxy had road trips to Vancouver, British Columbia, as well as Portland and St. Paul in the same month they traveled to Costa Rica. Their next month wasn't much kinder.
The LA Galaxy advanced to the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup and played Tigres UANL. That meant another international trip, this time to Monterrey, Mexico. There were four more regular season games in April for the six-time MLS Cup winners, too.
That's a lot of soccer in three months.
Head coach Greg Vanney was not settling with the results he was seeing on the field. Eventually, he relegated forward and leading-scorer Christian Ramirez to the bench. Vanney also placed Marco Reus up top more instead of at midfield.
Novak Micovic started the first three games of the season in goal only to be replaced by John McCarthy. Since the 2-2 draw against LAFC, Vanney put Micovic back in the Starting XI against RSL.
Diego Fagundez and Marco Reus both have three goals on the season, one behind Ramirez. Carlos Garces, Mauricio Cuevas and Lucas Sanabria are all under 25 years old and each have recorded a goal this season, too.
Last year's newcomers Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil have been battling injuries all season, as have veteran defenders Miki Yamane and Maya Yoshida.
Vanney now has options across his roster whether he sticks with the 4-2-3-1 formation or elects a different lineup.
St. Louis City SC, the Colorado Rapids and the San Jose Earthquakes are the three opponents for the LA Galaxy this month. All three will be hosting the defending MLS champions.
Entering this week, all of them have more losses than they do wins. Two of them (St. Louis City and the Rapids) have a negative goal differential.
The LA Galaxy's goal differential (-21) is by far the worst in the Western Conference. After a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake, Vanney and his team tasted victory for the first time in the 2025 MLS regular season.
