Manchester City’s Rodri has opened up about the possibility of Real Madrid pursuing his services in the future, calling the idea of joining the Spanish giants “an honour.”

The 28-year-old spoke candidly about speculation surrounding his future in a recent interview with Cadena SER, where he addressed the prospect of playing for the most successful club in European history.

Despite the speculation, the recently-crowned Ballon d’Or winner remains focused on his current role at Manchester City, where he has become a crucial figure in the team’s midfield since joining in the summer of 2019.

The subject of Real Madrid’s transfer interest has been a hot topic for several top-level players, with the club’s prestigious reputation and ability to attract world-class talent making them a consistent point of discussion in the football world.

Rodri’s performances with City – particularly during the historic treble season – have undoubtedly caught the eye of Europe’s elite. While he admits any approach from Los Blancos would be significant, he makes it clear his attention remains fixed on continuing to achieve success with City.

In the same interview, Rodri also reflected on Real Madrid’s boycott of the Ballon d’Or ceremony earlier this year, a moment that generated plenty of discussion throughout European media.

The decision not to attend or offer congratulations to Rodri raised eyebrows across the football community. However, the player himself remained remarkably calm and composed, offering a pragmatic take on the matter.

Speaking during a recent interview with Cadena SER, Rodri has discussed the possibility of Real Madrid transfer interest emerging for his services in the coming months, or at least at some stage in his top-level playing career.

“When Real Madrid call you, the best club in history, the most successful, everything that means… Obviously, it’s an honour and you always have to pay attention, of course,” the 28-year-old admitted, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness.

Continuing on the subject of Los Blancos’ boycott of the Ballon d’Or ceremony earlier this year, Rodri said, “I don’t know if they will go to more galas or not, it depends on them because it is a situation that they take for their reasons.

“here is no need to think about it any further. They didn’t call to congratulate me.”

Rodri’s comments show that he remains focused on his work with Manchester City, undistracted by external factors like the Ballon d’Or controversy from the viewpoint of the Santiago Bernabeu club, or rumours about potential moves back to Madrid.

With a key role in Pep Guardiola Manchester City’s midfield cemented for the foreseeable future, the Spanish international’s thoughts are clearly on continuing to contribute to the club’s ongoing success.

While Real Madrid’s interest in Rodri may not be an immediate concern, it is clear that he is one of the most sought-after midfielders in world football, should any club be able to tempt him into a switch and cough up the astronomical transfer fee City would likely demand.

For now, though, Rodri’s commitment to Manchester City remains strong, and he continues to be a vital part of the team’s efforts in both domestic and European competitions.
