Eiran Cashin has struggled for game time at Brighton since his January move from Derby County in a £9m deal.
Derby County secured survival in the Championship last season after a good run of form under John Eustace.
The Rams deserve credit for the upturn in form under the ex-Blackburn chief, and it’s perhaps overlooked that they did so without a player who had been integral over the past few years.
Of course, we’re talking about Eiran Cashin, with the Irish defender securing a £9m move to Brighton from the Midlands outfit in the January window.
The 23-year-old had been on the Seagulls’ radar for some time, and they finally managed to get a deal finalised in the winter window.
Whilst it was a good fee for Derby, they were taking a risk by losing a key player at that stage of the campaign, although they will no doubt no feel it was justified after they preserved their Championship status.
However, for Cashin, his first few months at his new club have been difficult.
Firstly, it should be said that this is common for mid-season arrivals, and Brighton are renowned for giving players time to find their feet before they put them in the team at Premier League level.
Nevertheless, Cashin has only made two brief sub appearances for his new club, the latest of which came in April as a 90th minute sub in a loss at Brentford.
Prior to that, his debut came against Aston Villa, and it was a tough 20 minutes for Cashin against Unai Emery’s talented side.
With Cashin having barely missed a game for Derby over the past few years, this will be different for him, and he is no doubt frustrated at his lack of minutes on the pitch, even if he understands the reasons.
Yet, he will have gained valuable experience working under Fabian Hürzeler on a day-to-day basis, and it’s worth noting that the German has a specific style of play that will be new to Cashin.
Moving forward, it’s hard to see Cashin’s situation changing too much next season.
Captain Lewis Dunk remains an influential figure at the club, and Jan Paul van Hecke has been Brighton’s best defender in the past 12 months. With Igor Julio and Adam Webster on the books, and Diego Coppola poised to join, there is fierce competition for places.
The Premier League side are always open to loaning out their players if it benefits their career, so Cashin may be on the move temporarily next season.
