On Sunday, Tottenham travel to Molineaux Stadium to talk on Premier League opposition Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wolves have essentially ensured they will avoid relegation this season, but a result here would allow them a little extra assurance they will avoid the drop this season. In this article, we'll give a look into our opponent's season so far.
Wolves did not get off to a great start this season. In the first 10 matches, the Wolverhampton side only managed a single win. 8 of the other 9 matches were losses. They currently sit 17th in the Premier League, and while they are 12 points clear of the relegation zone, it is safe to say they have not performed up to expectations this year.
However, things have started improving recently. Although their recent schedule has not necessarily been the most difficult, Wolves come into the match on Sunday as winners of three straight, and they look to extend a 4-game unbeaten streak. This is in stark contrast to Tottenham's Premier League form, as Spurs have only managed a win in 1 of their last 5 league matches.
Although it has been a rough season for Wolves, the one major bright spot in the side this season has been the breakout of Matheus Cunha. Cunha performed well last season for Wolves, netting 12 goals in 32 Premier League appearances. This season has proved to be even better for the Brazilian forward, as he has found the back of the net 13 times in just 26 matches.
However, Spurs will not have to worry about the goal threat of Cunha on Sunday. Cuhna is unable to play in the match due to a suspension he picked up due to improper conduct after being sent off in a matchup against Bournemouth.
While star player Cuhna will be absent this weekend, Wolves still have other players who can make a huge difference. Here are two players you should know about before the matchup.
Excluding Cunha, Jørgen Strand Larsen has been the main goal threat for Wolves this season. The Norse striker has netted 11 goals in just 29 Premier League appearances this season while on loan from Spanish side Celta Vigo. 4 of these 11 goals have come during Wolves' 3-match winning streak they carry into this weekend.
Larsen has stepped up since Cunha was suspended at the beginning of March, immediately replacing him as the main goalscoring threat. Spurs will have to keep close tabs on Larsen if they want a chance to shut him down this weekend.
While Jørgen Strand Larsen will be the main goal threat on Sunday, Wolves may not have a weapon as versatile as Rayan Aït-Nouri. The Portuguese left back is only 23, but has already become a solid left back for Wolves. Although not perfect defensively, he has huge defensive upside in his ability to win the ball back in the final third.
As Tottenham have had struggles breaking the press this season, this ability to win the ball high up the field could prove critical for Wolves. Aït-Nouri is also a huge creative threat as well. In 30 league matches this season he has managed to net 3 goals and provide 5 assists from his spot in defense. Aït-Nouri could be a major difference maker in the match on Sunday.
Although Wolves have enjoyed a great run of form even in the midst of Cuhna's suspension, I think Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou will be able to motivate the Tottenham side after a great creative display against Frankfurt this week. Wolves have benefitted from an easy schedule as of late, and I think the Tottenham side will prove too strong for the weakened Wolves side.
