Despite the inability of Ruud van Nistelrooy to save Leicester, and with many calling for his removal, his words following the Liverpool match are valid. Sunday's 1-0 loss to the Reds ensured that City would be playing in the Championship next season. The Dutchman made a point that is objectively best for the club, whether he's in charge moving forward or not.
His immediate point after the defeat was to urge the club to make a decision one way or another. Sometimes a manager will use their time in front of the media to make a case for themselves. Of course, that is what RvN was doing here. It doesn't make his statement any more or less true.
During the post-match press conference, van Nistelrooy urged the board to make up its mind and come to a decision. This makes sense. Nothing is further gained from waiting to announce what will happen with the former Dutch international's future.
At this point, everyone has seen what he can do, and even if they end the season on an impressive winning streak, it will have been after the season is already determined. Playing without pressure and knowing that one is freed up to try risks on the pitch is different from being in matches where there are still stakes within the campaign.
That isn't the point anymore. Instead, continuing to see improvement from Luke Thomas and Jeremy Monga needs to be the priority. Knowing now will best position the club moving forward. If the current City boss is allowed to stay on, he'll be able to continue to work with some of the younger players and continue to work out their best development plan and place in the team for next season.
If, and this appears most likely at this point, he is let go, the club can properly start its search for the next person right away. Those in the side can certainly still finish out the remaining fixtures with the Dutchman, but this unknown aspect over King Power will have been removed and can, in a sense, provide some relief.
Either way, playing a game of wait and see doesn't help anyone. It needs to be said, the players appear to have slightly improved as of the last two weeks, but it's doubtful that it will be enough to change the minds of the powers-that-be.
