“What everybody wants” – Defender contradicts Enzo Maresca by admitting there is only one aim for Chelsea this season

Levi Colwill was the Chelsea player lined up to speak to the media after the Blues’ late double earned them a win over Fulham last night, and as ever the defender spoke very well about the victory and what might come next.

“We’re really happy with the win and to celebrate with the fans at the end was special. We work so hard for them [fans], so to see them head home happy at the end is a great feeling. It’s a big win for us at this stage of the season anyway but when you consider it’s a local derby, with the rivalry in place, then it means that bit more.”

There have been a few times this season where we’ve seen players and fans really bond, and last night was perhaps the most special one yet, in the context of how much pressure the players were under, how important the 3 points were and how late the goals came. Colwill agreed:

“It meant a lot to us, especially in the manner that we got the winner through Pedro, and to celebrate with the fans at the end was really special. It keeps us pushing for a top four finish and to secure Champions League football, which is what everybody wants and a club like Chelsea should be playing in the best competitions.

Colwill contradicts Enzo Maresca with Champions League aims

Enzo Maresca takes a post-match press conference.

It’s still tricky to pin down manager Enzo Maresca on the subject of the Champions League – he keeps insisting that this season has been an improvement whether we make it to Europe’s top competition or not, simply because we’ve been in the race this time, which we weren’t last season or the season before.

We would point out to him that the main reason for that is that the teams battling to get into it have all fallen off significantly this season, and also that there is now a 5th spot which would get us in.

At least the players like Colwill are more realistic about it, and when he acknowledges that “Chelsea should be playing in the best competitions” and that’s “what everybody wants”  he is happy to contradict his manager.
