When a side sacks a manager while they are in the relegation zone, it is usually met by approval from the fanbase. For Cercle Brugge a few weeks ago, this was not the case. When head coach Miron Muslic was sacked, the fans were upset. Muslic was an incredibly popular figure inside and outside of the club, and the fanbase were sad to see him go. The Austrian had taken them from relegation candidates to European qualification, and while they were struggling to balance both at the same time, many felt that if he had been backed in January he could have steered them to safety. However, he was not given the chance.
It was unsurprising that Muslic was only out of the game for a few weeks. The job he did at Cercle clearly impressed those at Plymouth Argyle. Can he strike gold again? Plymouth fans should be excited at the prospect of a Muslic led side. He is a strong man manager, able to get the best out of young players and those with more experience. His style is to counter-press, looking to win the ball high up the pitch. His young Cercle side were physical and direct, preferring to play as much in the opposition half as they could. Rarely would they be looking to build from the back.
The confident Austrian will certainly have his work cut out for him. He takes over the side as they are bottom of the Championship in a league that is less forgiving than the Belgian Pro League. His first job is to try and win the sides next three home games. Cercle, last season at least, were good at home. It will be interesting to see how quickly his current Plymouth side can adapt to the style of play he wants to implement. If he can turn things around, he will have one of the best fanbases in England behind him. Muslic cultivated a strong bond with the Cercle fans and he will know that doing the same with Plymouth could be crucial to avoiding the drop.
