West Ham United want to sign Werder Bremen attacking midfielder Romano Schmid this summer, according to the Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg.
Manager Graham Potter wants to bolster his options in the final third at the London Stadium club, and the Austria international has caught his attention.
Schmid could cost around €15 million, which should be affordable for the Hammers, but they will face competition from Aston Villa and Fulham, who are also monitoring the 25-year-old.
He has been dubbed ‘dangerous’ and also boasts ‘real quality’, and West Ham need his qualities.
Schmid ended last term with five goals and six assists in 35 games after notching four goals and seven assists in 2023-24, and his versatility would come in handy for the Hammers.
The Austrian can play on both wings and in the centre. He brings creativity on the ball to the table, and Potter could use his ability to make the right passes in the attacking third.
The Hammers have mostly strengthened at the back so far this summer, signing Jean-Clair Todibo permanently. El Hadji Malick Diouf and Kyle Walker-Peters have also joined.
Scotland youth international Daniel Cummings is their only attacking signing, but he has joined the under-21 development squad for pre-season training.
West Ham have been linked with several attackers, but they have yet to make a concrete move and will need to accelerate their efforts as the new season approaches.
They have former Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson on their radar. They are also eyeing a potential move for Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz.
