West Ham brought in a whopping 10 players on either permanent transfers or loans between the last summer and winter transfer windows, and while Max Kilman, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jean-Clair Todibo, and Crysencio Summerville have shown that they can be a part of the future, the majorit of the incoming additions look like they are headed right back out.
The Hammers are 16th in the Premier League, and while they are at no risk of relegation this season, their status in the standings highlights just how far away they are from their goal of returnig to European football as the former 2023 Conference League Champions.
West Ham will need to make wholescale changes this summer to support new manager Graham Potter, but in order to be able to actually afford the kinds of players who can help them get to Europe, the Hammers are going to have to sell some notable players.
According to a report from The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg, West Ham are prepared to field transfer offers for four players in order to raise funds: striker Niclas Fullkrug, center back Konstantinos Mavropanos, defensive midfielder Guido Rodriguez, and left back Emerson Palmieri. These four players would be starters when healthy, but none of them are vital players.
Emerson may be the only surprising name on the list, since he's the nailed-on starter at left back and the Hammers don't really have a whole lot of options behind him. The thing is, Potter will be moving to a back three when he has the right personnel, and Emerson doesn't fit in as a wing back at all.
The others are much more straightforward. Fullkrug was a good striker for Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen but is well above the age of 30 and can't get on the pitch. Guido Rodriguez is a decent player but doesn't help West Ham materially, nor does he seem to fit the Premier League. Mavropanos was once a star in the Bundesliga for Stuttgart, but his blunders are costing West Ham points; he clearly has to go.
It's also important to remember that all four of these players are competent footballers, so they could feasibly fetch the Hammers something valuable on the market while offloading a significant amount of money in wages. All four would likely be better off playing for somebody else, preferably outside the Premier League, than remaining at the London Stadium in 2025/26.
