West Ham United have held ‘positive talks’ with Jonathan David as the club look to win the race to sign the forward.

David’s contract at Lille will expire in the summer and the forward looks unlikely to renew his deal with the French side. His availability as a free agent has alerted leading clubs across Europe, with West Ham hoping to win a competitive chase for his signature.

Though there’s rival interest from clubs in the Premier League and Italy, the Hammers are hopeful that the promise of a key part in their project can lure David to the London Stadium.

The Canada international has scored 107 goals in 226 appearances since joining Lille from Gent and has breached 20 goals in three consecutive campaigns. This season, he scored seven times in the Champions League as Lille reached the Round of 16.

West Ham’s lack of European football could prove problematic to their pursuit, but The Athletic are reporting that David’s representatives have held ‘positive talks’ with the club over a potential move.

The 25-year-old is understood to be West Ham’s top target for the summer, given the unavailability issues of Michail Antonio and Niclas Fullkrug this season.

Discussing West Ham’s approach to his first summer in charge, head coach Graham Potter has promised an ‘exciting’ transfer window.

“I don’t like to speak about specific positions or things like that because as soon as you do, the market goes crazy and it becomes unhelpful for us,” said Potter in Friday’s pre-match press conference ahead of facing Liverpool on Sunday.

“But we want to move towards a style of play that is recognisable. We need to think about the character of the players, personality and how they fit into the values of the club. It is not just about the talent on the pitch but off it too. How open they are to being here and the demands of playing for West Ham. It’s going to be an exciting summer.”
