The 22-year-old joined the Hornets in the January window back in 2023, and he has gone on to make over 50 appearances for the club since his arrival.

Even though it has been an underwhelming period for the club, Kone has done well, particularly last season as he emerged as a key figure for Watford as they finished mid-table in the second tier.

Ismael Kone transfer latest

And, in a fresh development, Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has revealed on social media that Kone is looking to make the step-up this summer.

Watford midfielder Ismael Kone keen on move to club in one of Europe's top Leagues. West Ham, Roma & Marseille interested. Incoming Marseille boss Roberto de Zerbi understood to be big admirer.”

No fee has been discussed for Kone, but the ex-Montreal CF man has a contract at Vicarage Road until the summer of 2027, so Watford will be under no pressure to cash in.

Ismael Kone will hope to impress at Copa America

As mentioned, Kone is currently on international duty with Canada, and he will no doubt be using the platform of Copa America to show potential suitors that he can play at a high level.

Boss Jesse Marsch has been pleased with the contributions of Kone since his appointment, and he played 85 minutes against Argentina in their opening game of the tournament, with the world champions winning 2-0.

Canada have group games against Chile and Peru to come, as they look to secure a top two finish in the group to progress to the knockout stages.

As well as raising Kone’s profile with a good showing in the United States, Watford will know that some impressive performances for Canada if they go deep in the tournament is sure to increase his value.

Watford’s summer transfer plans

Obviously, this news is far from ideal for Watford and Tom Cleverley, as the manager will want to build around the likes of Kone moving forward.

But, we know how football works, and the chance to move to any of the clubs mentioned was always going to appeal to Kone, and he understandably feels he is ready to make that next step in his career.

From the Hornets’ perspective, they aren’t going to be spending big this summer, so a big sale was always a possibility, and it would give Cleverley and the recruitment team more freedom in the market.

So, a departure can’t be ruled out, and whilst it would be a shame for Watford if Kone didn’t fulfil his potential at Vicarage Road, it could be the right move for all parties this summer if a substantial offer does arrive for his services.
