Blackburn's Tyrhys Dolan was sad to see John Eustace leave the club as he enters the final months of his contract at Ewood Park.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings, and more…
Blackburn Rovers attacker Tyrhys Dolan has been tipped to reunite with John Eustace again at some point in the future – although any chance of him joining Derby County is expected to depend on them staying in the Championship.
It has been a positive season for Rovers, who are currently in the play-off places after their 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.
However, it has been a hectic period for Blackburn, with Eustace making the shock decision to leave for Derby despite the Rams battling to stay in the second tier.
Naturally, that caused plenty of anger among the Blackburn fan base, with many unhappy that Eustace decided to leave mid-season, particularly as promotion is a possibility, even if working under the owners is said to be difficult.
Yet, Dolan was full of praise for his former boss and he admitted on Instagram that it "hurts" to read some of the criticism directed at the new Derby manager.
The 23-year-old played some of the best football in his career under Eustace but with his contract expiring in the summer, there are doubts about Dolan’s long-term future as he weighs up his next move.
So, when FLW asked fan pundit Simon if the close relationship Dolan had with Eustace would push the winger closer to the exit door, he admitted he could see them reuniting at some point in the future.
He said: “Dolan’s is a weird situation. When he is on it, and has his head in the game, he is absolutely quality, but there have been times in the past few years when mentally he has struggled off the pitch, and that’s resonated on the pitch.
“Eustace seemed to be a manager that could keep him consistent, and a figure for Dolan to lean on, which he didn’t quite have under Jon Dahl Tomasson or Tony Mowbray.
“We know Dolan will be out of contract in the summer, so there is a possibility that Eustace would push for him, but that will depend on what happens with Derby as well. If they do get relegated, would Dolan drop to League One? I doubt it.
“But, it would not surprise me in the future if Dolan is reunited with Eustace. He is definitely someone who can get the best out of him and someone who knows how he works and operates.”
Dolan has shown his quality at times this season, and, at 23, he is an exciting player with huge potential.
Therefore, it’s far from ideal for Blackburn that he is in a position where he is entering the final months of his contract, and the player is now going to decide his future.
Clearly, he loved his time with Eustace, and there’s no denying that the manager helped him play some of the best football of his career.
So, it’s understandable that some will feel they can link up again in the future, and it would be a coup for Derby if they could bring him in.
But, a lot can happen between now and the summer, and the only concern for Dolan right now will be helping Rovers to secure a top-six finish and then trying to reach the Premier League.
