Their poor form continued this season with a 1-0 defeat at Pride Park against Derby County on Saturday afternoon, meaning they have failed to win in their opening five league games.

In the aftermath of that loss, John Percy of The Telegraph revealed that the Cardiff hierarchy could be set to make a change imminently, despite Bulut securing a mid-table finish last season in the Championship.

Prior to Bulut's arrival last summer, they had spent the last two Championship campaigns flirting with the relegation zone. In the eyes of some, the 49-year-old has since brought stability to the side after taking his first role in the EFL.

Many fans were hoping he could build on finishing mid-table in his first campaign after a high turnover of players this summer. Perhaps they could push for a play-off place, with ambition shown within the market through signings such as Anwar El Ghazi, Chris Willock, Calum Chambers, and Jesper Daland.

However, the defeat at Pride Park leaves Cardiff bottom of the table, having picked up just a solitary point from five games, conceding 11 goals already in the process. Ryan Lowe and Steven Schumacher have left their jobs int he second tier, but Bulut could be the next to follow.

Carlton Palmer urges Cardiff City to hand Erol Bulut more time

Ex-England international and current EFL pundit Carlton Palmer believes the Cardiff boss is deserving of more time given that there have only been five games so far this campaign.

Speaking to Football League World, he said: "Cardiff City are considering sacking Erol Bulut after a winless start to the season."

"They sit rock bottom of the Championship at the moment with just one point.

"It's very difficult to start talking about sacking your manager after five games. Okay, it was a 1-0 defeat to Derby, who have just newly been promoted. But at the end of the day, he managed to do a good job last season in keeping them up comfortably.

"I think there's a bit of patience to be given and time to be taken to see how the situation unfolds at the football club this season. Obviously, Cardiff want to stay in the Championship, so therefore, they are going to take a look at it.

"You don't want to leave yourself with too much to do, but at this moment in time, they are only a few points adrift of Preston North End, Sheffield Wednesday, Luton, and Millwall.

"There's nothing in it, as two wins and you're out [of the relegation zone]. But you don't want to be playing catch up and end up in the same situation Sheffield Wednesday were in last season.

"There's only so many times you can get away with that, but I think they need to be patient — at least for the next two or three games.

"If you're going to sack him, then you need to know who you're going to bring in. But the transfer window has gone and ended, so the manager that you're going to sack is someone who helped bring the players in and work with them and knows them.

"So, unless you think the manager has lost the dressing room and lost the players, then I think it's way too early for replacing a manager.

"Look at how much difference a few weeks makes. Wayne Rooney and Plymouth had people all saying this and that and they have just beaten Sunderland who were top of the league and looked unbeatable.

"Now, they're on five points and moving up the table. It's all about giving people the time, patience, and keeping your nerve. Cardiff shouldn't be moving that way at this point in time."

Erol Bulut's future at Cardiff City

Bulut is in a difficult position because performances haven't necessarily aligned with results so far for Cardiff this season.

Despite collecting just a point, and not always playing particularly well, it's unfair to say that they have been catastrophic in each game, with a bit of bad luck and variance perhaps going against them in both boxes.

In that sense, Palmer is right to call for calm heads and to hand him more time, but it cannot be something that continues for much longer.
