Sheffield United had to battle to the end to ensure they left Vicarage Road with a 2-1 win over Watford.

The Blades got off to an unbelievable start when Callum O’Hare poked a through ball to Gustavo Hamer, who strolled onto the pass and delivered a clinical finish beyond the Watford goalkeeper in the 13th minute. That lead would only last seven minutes as Jeremy Ngakia got beyond his markers at the back post to steer home a Ryan Andrews low cross. United had Andre Brooks to thank for his superb solo goal as he curled the ball beyond Daniel Bachmann, from around 25 yards out, into the bottom left corner.

Chris Wilder has no choice but to refresh the forward options for the trip to Watford as Kieffer Moore missed out due to illness. This saw Ryan Oné earn his second start of the campaign. Andre Brooks and Harrison Burrows also came back into the lineup to replace Rhian Brewster and Sam McCallum.

First Half

Sheffield United almost got off to a perfect start inside 30 seconds when Brooks delivered a delightful whipping cross which glanced off the shoulder of the jumping Oné.

The warning signs were there from kick-off, and the Blades deservedly struck the opening goal in the 13th minute when Callum O’Hare’s excellent through ball saw Gustavo Hamer race through and expertly smash the ball into the right half of the goal.

Although the Blades were in control of the game they suffered a setback when Jeremy Ngakia got free at the far post to tap home a low cross from Ryan Andrews at the right byline.

The home side almost gifted United a goal when Daniel Bachmann in the Watford goal turned on the ball inside his own six-yard box with Callum O’Hare chasing him down. O’Hare’s toe poke tackle narrowly went wide of the post.

Hamer had a powerful free-kick attempt, from around 30 yards out, comfortably saved in the final moments of the first half.

Second Half

With nothing to separate the two teams on the score line, the Blades cranked up the pressure at the beginning of the first half and they reaped their rewards in the 53rd minute from a fantastic curling long-range effort from Andre Brooks, who celebrated with a backflip in front of the travelling supporters.

The Blades were given a scare just after the hour mark when the hosts nearly equalised through Baah’s precise cutback to Chakvetadze just six yards from goal, but Robinson and Cooper combined brilliantly to block the effort.

United responded immediately, with Davies threading a pass to O’Hare, whose powerful strike was parried by Bachmann. Watford quickly countered, as Vata tested Cooper with a sharp shot at the near post.

Into added time, O’Hare and Peck led a counter charge which almost saw Peck latch onto a through ball inside the box. Shortly after, McCallum raced away down the left and smacked a volley towards the near post which was saved by Bachmann, but unfortunately at some cost. The Watford goalkeeper suffered a lower leg injury which inevitably ended the game as he got treatment by the medical staff.
