Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has signed a new two-year contract extension, keeping him at Anfield until the summer of 2027.
The Dutch defender becomes the second major figure to commit his future to Liverpool in recent days, following Mohamed Salah’s contract renewal.
His decision puts an end to mounting speculation surrounding his future, with the 33-year-old previously out of contract at the end of the current campaign.
Van Dijk’s has been ever-present in Liverpool’s league campaign this season, playing every minute and proving once again why he is still regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the world.
His leadership and performances at the back have been crucial in the Reds’ push for a record-equalling 20th league title.
Since arriving from Southampton for a £75 million fee in January 2018, Van Dijk has become a cornerstone of Liverpool’s most successful era in recent memory.
He has made 314 appearances to date, 63rd on the club’s all-time list and won every major honour, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
Speaking to the club after signing his new deal, Van Dijk said: “It always felt right. I said it from the first day that it felt right and I think it showed in the years we have spent together up until now. And obviously more years to come.
“It is the place for me to be, to spend my best years, be successful with the club as we have been over the years and hopefully the future as well.
“And I love the city, I love the club, I love the fans. I love my teammates. I love everything that embodies Liverpool, and on to many more.”
Van Dijk has often been linked with moves away, especially with his previous contract nearing its end, but his extension now provides much-needed clarity at the heart of Liverpool’s defence heading into a busy summer for new sporting director Richard Hughes.
