Before the Swede's move to Arsenal, there were some press reports that suggested the player had broken up with his girlfriend and pressured Sporting Lisbon's management to let him move to Arsenal and experience the Premier League atmosphere, especially since the Portuguese club's management refused to let him go.
But the Swede quickly denied all these rumors and justified his move by saying that he had his own opinion on the matter.
In a candid reflection on the dynamics of modern football, the striker pushed back against the notion that players wield excessive influence over their clubs. If anything, he argued, the balance of power rests firmly in the hands of the clubs—not the athletes.
“Sometimes you just don’t know what’s really happening behind the scenes. In his case, I also don’t know exactly what the situation was. We’re all playing the game. But the clubs have the most power. In many cases, it’s hard for players to have a choice. They have no power—the clubs can do whatever they want with a player. It’s tough, but that’s how things are,” Gyokeres remarked during his conversation with Sky Sports.
His comments arrived on a day of seismic transfer activity, which saw his international compatriot, Alexander Isak, complete a dramatic deadline-day move to Liverpool—a deal that now stands as the most expensive in the history of English football.
