Pedro Neto came on and brought loads of energy and got the goal. The other player to come on was Marc Guiu, and he showed his usual bull in a china shop energy, bustling around and getting his team up the pitch with his sheer effort.

But in the final moments of the game, he lost his balance and twisted his knee in trying to control a ball in the box. He carried on playing as it was so close to the final whistle, but after full time he was seen limping down the tunnel looking “very upset” – and injured, according to Simon Johnson.

You can see a video of the injury from Stamford Bridge in the clip embedded here:

This would be a huge shame for Guiu if it’s serious. It would be truly, brutally tragically ironic – he was only on the pitch to start with because Nicolas Jackson had struggled so much in the first 50 minutes, and in the last run of games before that.

We’re still not sure that Enzo Maresca would have made the huge call to start Guiu in the Premier League next time out, but he certainly would have got the cup game to prove himself again, and without doubt he’s closer than he’s ever been to unseating Jackson as first choice.

Now we’re left in a terrible position, assuming Guiu misses Saturday’s cup game against Brighton. There’s no way a shattered Jackson starts that one either, so it will be a makeshift setup from the manager, with Christopher Nkunku likely to play as a “false 9.”
