Victor Boniface returns and starts for Bayer Leverkusen against Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga this evening after his move to Al-Nassr broke down. Despite reaching an agreement with both club and player, the Saudi outfit instead opted to sign Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran for a reported €77m.
Today’s game against Hoffenheim will be Boniface’s 11th Bundesliga game of the season, having scored six and created one in his previous 10 before a hamstring injury ruled the Nigerian out of eight league games.
Last week, Al-Nassr had reached an agreement to sign Boniface for a reported €60m, which would have made the 24-year-old Bayer’s second most expensive departure in their history after Kai Havertz’ move to Chelsea for €80m in 2020. The Nigerian had already passed his medical with Al-Nassr, and would have earned a reported €15m per season before the move hit a roadblock.
In the event that Boniface would leave the BayArena, Die Werkself eyed Brighton’s Evan Ferguson as a replacement, but the Irishman is now expected to join West Ham before tomorrow’s deadline.
