The goal average is hugely on Barcelona’s side, who have scored 16 goals and conceded just two. Meanwhile, St Pölten had to deal with a hugely difficult match with just 15 players available.
Coll; Batlle, Torrejón, Engen, Fernández, Walsh, Bonmatí, Kika, Pina, Pajor, López.
Schlüter; D’angelo, Johanning, Vračević, Mikolajová, Schumacher, Mädl, Brunnthaler, Hillebrand, Melike Pekel, Dubcová.
Barcelona hosted SKN St. Pölten on a cold afternoon at the Johan Cruyff Stadium. Despite not fielding some usual players, Barcelona showcased dominant possession and offensive play to get a convincing victory over the Austrian side.
Injury-hit St. Pölten defended well during the first 30 minutes of the match. Andrea Glibo and Tea Krznarić were the only outfield substitute options they had on the bench due to multiple injuries.
Barca did not find the desired opener goal until the 32nd minute. Once Ewa Pajor put the first goal on the scoresheet, the Austrian team surrended and struggled to contain Barcelona’s well-coordinated attack, which led to several goals for the home team.
Kika Nazareth, followed by Pajor again, then Keira Walsh with an unstoppable shot, and Clàudia Pina honouring Johan Cruyff, extended the distance between the two teams. From not scoring in the first half an hour, to going to the dressing rooms 5-0 up, left the match already decided at half-time.
During the second half, Pina scored the sixth goal from the penalty spot. Caroline Graham Hansen was responsible for the seventh and final nail in the coffin. The seven goals mean more than just three points for Barca, as goal average is also an important aspect to consider.
“Objective met — yes, absolutely. Even when we couldn’t score in the first half an hour, we were getting in behind them. And I knew once we got the first goal, more would follow,” Pere Romeu said in the post-match press conference.
Barcelona will play in El Clásico against Real Madrid in Liga F match this weekend. Next Wednesday, the Catalans will travel to face St Pölten again in the fourth round of UWCL group stage. The Austrian side’s next game is set to be this Sunday against SC Rheindorf Altach.
