Universidad Católica axe manager after turbulent season

Tiago Nunes has parted ways with Universidad Católica after just under a year in charge, bringing an end to the Brazilian manager’s latest international chapter. The club and Nunes reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract, although he had signed an extension late last year that was set to run until December 2025.

The decision wraps up a campaign in which Nunes led the Chilean side in 46 matches. During his spell, Universidad Católica recorded 19 wins, 10 draws, and 17 losses. The results highlighted fluctuating form that ultimately led both parties to conclude it was time for a change.

Reflecting on his departure, Nunes said, “Thank God for allowing me to experience this important process! A beautiful club, with unforgettable people. That’s how this cycle of work ends and another great international experience. Thank you, Chile and Cruzada family.”

Nunes arrived at Universidad Católica in 2024 following an earlier stint abroad with Peru’s Sporting Cristal. With the Peruvian club, he oversaw 47 matches and managed them in continental competition. In Brazil, he is best known for head coaching roles at Athletico-PR, Grêmio, Ceará, Corinthians, and more recently, Botafogo.

At [Corinthians](https://sportseye.io/clubs/131), Nunes was appointed in early 2020, inheriting a squad expected to challenge for domestic and continental honours. His tenure, however, proved short-lived as inconsistent results led to an early exit. Since then, Nunes has continued to seek opportunities both at home and on the international stage, building a reputation for adaptability and willingness to take on new challenges.

With his time in Chile now over, Nunes finds himself a free agent, positioning him as a candidate for clubs both in Brazil and elsewhere looking to bring in an experienced manager with a growing track record in South American football. For Universidad Católica, attention turns to finding a successor who can stabilise results and deliver on expectations for the remainder of the campaign.
