Manchester United got their pre-season campaign in the USA off to a winning start with a 2-1 victory over West Ham at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
It didn’t take long for United to make an impression - Rasmus Hojlund struck the post within the first couple of minutes, and they were ahead soon after.
Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring just five minutes in, calmly converting a penalty after Alphonse Areola flapped at a cross and then brought down Ayden Heaven in the box.
Fernandes was on target again early in the second half, curling in a tidy effort from outside the area. The chance came after another mistake from Areola, whose poor pass out from the back landed straight at the feet of Kobbie Mainoo, setting up the goal.
West Ham pulled one back through Jarrod Bowen in the 63rd minute, and he nearly grabbed an equaliser in stoppage time, but Altay Bayindir was equal to it. United, however, saw the game out to claim all three points in their Premier League Summer Series opener.
Earlier in the day, Bournemouth enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win over Everton, thanks to goals from Philip Billing, Dango Ouattara, and Daniel Adu-Adjei.
