Manchester United are evaluating Mason Mount’s future at Old Trafford and whether he would benefit from a temporary spell or move elsewhere.

The Red Devils shelled out a whopping £55 million to sign Mount from Chelsea in July 2023, which saw him sever his 18-year ties with the club before moving to a direct Premier League rival. At the time United pledged such a costly fee, the midfielder had only a year remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge.

In his maiden season as a Red, Mount was limited to just 20 appearances across all competitions, only eight of which came from the off. His year was plagued by unrelenting injury setbacks — a theme which, unfortunately, continued into 2024/2025.

He managed to feature in six more games throughout his sophomore campaign, yet could still muster a measly 10 starts in total; eight in the Premier League and two in the Europa League.

The 26-year-old has accumulated 46 appearances in total for United, scoring four goals and assisting once.

Aston Villa mull over Mount swoop

Such form and availability haven’t made him the most desired asset in Europe, but it also hasn’t deterred interest entirely. In fact, Aston Villa are said to be mulling over a move for the struggling midfielder in a move similar to Marcus Rashford’s at the start of the year; the outcast No.10 joined Unai Emery’s ranks on loan for a half-season loan spell and oversaw a revived run of form following a stagnant period in M16.

A loan would likely be the most suitable option from United’s point of view, as Amorim has previously expressed his admiration for Mount and made it clear how much he wants him to succeed at Old Trafford.

“Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid,” said the boss back in November. “You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.

“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.”

Regarding Villa’s potential swoop for the 36-capped England international, ex-chief United scout Mick Brown told Football Insider: “United have tried to establish whether there is a market for Mason Mount

“Aston Villa have been spoken about and I think they could make a move. People remember Mason Mount at his best [and] that’s what Villa want to help him get back to, and it looks like he’s back to full fitness now.

“His move to Man United hasn’t been positive by any means, but he’s still a talented player. Villa want to strengthen because they’ve lost Rashford and [Marco] Asensio, so Mount is on their list.

“Unai Emery is a fan of his and feels he could help him to rediscover his Chelsea form. It would be an excellent move for Mount as well, because Villa are a top club, they’ve got top facilities and they’ll be playing in Europe.”
