David Moyes’ second stint as Everton manager started with a disappointing 1-0 home defeat against Aston Villa last night.
Moyes was in full deflection mode after the game, spouting comments which should worry Everton fans.
“It’s not really a great deal to do with David Moyes tonight, it’s a lot to do with the players,” Moyes told TNT Sports.
His views on the team’s attacking woes were also concerning.
“I think it is there for everybody to see,” Moyes added. “I can’t magician all that to change after one and a bit days – I just can’t do it. It’s a huge challenge at the moment.”
Here’s the thing. Last night was about Moyes. It was about him showing that the club was right to sack Sean Dyche.
A first game for a new manager is a free hit. It’s a chance to tinker with things – try something new to spark a reaction.
Magicians take chances. Moyes failed to do so. His refusal to take ownership of the defeat was particularly noteworthy.
Moyes has plenty of previous form for this. His team wins – he’s the glory boy. His team loses – someone else is to blame.
Everton were undoubtedly struggling under Dyche. However, replacing him with a manager cut from the same cloth is a hugely questionable move.
It is one which Everton could live to regret.
Manchester United received plenty of plaudits for beating Arsenal in the FA Cup last weekend. Southampton at home in the Premier League should be a breeze, shouldn’t it?
