With little over a week to go before the Ligue 2 restart, two teams remain in the dark over their involvement in the competition. Last month, AC Ajaccio received confirmation that they would be relegated from the second division due to financial troubles, while US Boulogne Co were told that they would be promoted from the Championnat National in the Corsican club’s place.
It was a decision that Ajaccio firmly rejected and announced that they would appeal to the CNOSF. However, according to La Voix du Nord, the Corsican club still have not formally done so, and can legally wait until the 6th of August (three days before the start of the season). It has left both clubs in limbo, with neither knowing who will line up against SC Bastia to start the campaign on Saturday, the 9th of August, as time is running out to postpone the match.
The mayor of Boulogne, Frédéric Cuvillier, has hit out at this delay as “unacceptable and irresponsible”, calling on the French footballing authorities to take action. “I ask the leaders to stop hiding,” he declared in a Facebook post, “as they have been doing for several weeks, behind procedural quibbles which, in addition to their absurd and grotesque nature, lack any basis and cause moral and sporting harm to the entire club. We can only legitimately question the real reasons for this hesitation and procrastination, which translates into complicit passivity.”
He further added, “Eight days before the start of the season, I call on the national authorities to finally assume their responsibilities and act with respect for our club, our city, and the values we uphold.”
