Borussia Dortmund's U19s are way ahead of the competition in the U19 Bundesliga West. The West German champions got the job done away to SC Verl without any major problems. Their 5-2 victory was their 22nd win in 24 matches. Cole Campbell (2), Danylo Krevsun, Charles Herrmann and Vincenzo Onofrietti were on target for BVB.

It has been clear for almost a month now that the Dortmund boys will be advancing to the final round of the German Championship. "It's not easy for them to keep the energy high, especially as we are now sending players to three teams," explains head coach Mike Tullberg. Paris Brunner started for the U23s at the weekend and Elias Benkara and Ousmane Diallo will strengthen the U17s in the remainder of the season. Also missing in Verl were the injured Filippo Mane and the ill Jaden Korzynietz.

BVB started the game well. Cole Campbell gave them a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute, but then some carelessness and lapses in concentration crept in, particularly in defence. Two "unnecessary free kicks" (Tullberg's words) led to two goals for SC Verl through Lukas Reipöhler in the 13th and 38th minutes. Campbell then equalised for BVB in the 36th minute and Danylo Krevsun made it 3-2 just before the break.

"We were decent with the ball, but we completely forgot to defend," said Tullberg, who then sent out a note of caution ahead of the semi-finals of the German Championship: "What we do now will follow us into the final round." The boys took their boss's words of warning to heart. Despite the heated atmosphere in the Sportclub Arena, BVB kept a cool head in the second half and delivered a far more composed performance. Goals from Charles Herrmann (60) and Vincenzo Onofrietti (79) finally removed all doubts to notch up a deserved 5-2 victory.

Derby against Schalke 04 at home on Sunday

Next Sunday, BVB will face FC Schalke 04, who suffered a further setback in the battle for second place in the table with their 3-2 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach and are now 23 points behind the West German champions. The match will get underway at 11:00 CEST.

It looks increasingly likely that Hertha BSC will be the opponents in the semi-final, which will take place on Thursday 16 May (18:30 CEST) and Monday 20 May (11:00 CEST). The Berliners won 3-1 away to Rasenballsport Leipzig and lead the Bundesliga North/North-East table by five points ahead of VfL Wolfsburg with two rounds of fixtures to go before the end of the season.

U19s: Zacharias – Rashidi (83, Benkara), Adamczyk, Posadas (63, Ubani), Kabar (79, Plöger) – Lubach, Wätjen (63, Rahmann) – Herrmann, Krevsun (79, Niziolek), Onofrietti – Campbell
