Inter Milan superstar Hakan Calhanoglu is determined to feature for Simone Inzaghi’s side against Hellas Verona this weekend.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, the 30-year-old hopes to make himself available after suffering a minor injury setback on international duty.
Calhanoglu has endured an injury-hit start to the season.
Indeed, he had fatigue problems in September before sustaining a thigh injury against Roma on October 20.
That forced him off for a fortnight as he only returned to the starting line-up on the stroke of the international break.
After squandering a crucial penalty against Napoli, he joined his national team for November’s UEFA Nations League fixtures.
However, he had to come off less than 45 minutes into Turkey’s home clash against Wales last weekend.
Despite scares Calhanoglu might have renewed his thigh issue, he could be fit for Inter’s trip to Verona on Saturday.
During yesterday’s press conference, Calhanoglu reiterated his ambition to play against Paolo Zanetti’s side.
He has rejected Inter’s call to return to Giuseppe Meazza early to treat his injury out of commitment to his national team.
Indeed, Turkey will meet Montenegro in a pivotal Nations League encounter later this evening.
After that, he will travel back to Italy to rejoin Simone Inzaghi’s squad.
However, whether he’ll be in contention for the matchday squad remains questionable.
Turkish doctors have reportedly reassured Inter that Calhanoglu’s recent injury wasn’t serious.
But Inzaghi could still opt not to take unnecessary risks.
Furthermore, he is ready to deploy Kristjan Asllani as a deep-lying midfielder at Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi.
Despite not featuring for Inter in Serie A since September, the Albanian is ready to fill Calhanoglu’s shoes.
Meanwhile, the Turkish ace doesn’t want to stay on the sidelines.
He’ll try to convince Inzaghi to give him a chance to atone for a missed penalty.
