Troy Deeney thinks Reece James is in “last chance saloon” at Chelsea following his latest injury setback with the Blues captain facing another spell on the sidelines.
Enzo Maresca confirmed in Thursday’s press conference James would miss Saturday’s trip to Leicester with a hamstring injury picked up in training, although it’s unclear how long James will be out for.
It’s a bitter blow for the England international who only returned to action in last month’s defeat to Liverpool at Anfield and he completed back to back 90 minutes in recent games against Newcastle and Manchester United.
The Telegraph reported on Friday that James will undergo a scan on his hamstring on Saturday to determine how long he will be out of action for, with the right back said to be devastated about his latest setback.
Chelsea will need to rally round James and support him in every way they can and the defender put out a statement on social media on Thursday night, which seemed to confirm he would miss more than just the Leicester game.
The latest injury is the 20th James has suffered since 2019, and it’s such a shame to see such a talented player plagued by injury issues instead of showing his quality on the pitch.
James has suffered yet another hamstring injury.
It’s frustrating and difficult for everyone, none more so than James himself, but Deeney believes he is now in last chance saloon at Chelsea following this latest setback.
“It just seems to me that he always breaks down,” he told talkSPORT as cited on X.com.
“I thought it was strange to make him captain if I’m being totally honest for the reason that he’s never fit and available.

“I think he’s in last chance saloon as to whether he will be at Chelsea. Where he goes after that is a massive struggle because he might end up, to a lesser scale, in the Jack Wilshere mould where he has to go to a Bournemouth on a pay-as-you-play type deal.”
In James’ absence Malo Gusto will fill in at right back, but in terms of other options it’s currently just Axel Disasi and the Blues could do with Josh Acheampong resolving his contract stand off with the club, which has currently seen him frozen out and not playing.
