Tottenham host Roma in the Europa League tonight looking to build momentum after a statement win at the weekend.

Ange Postecoglou’s side thrashed Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad at the weekend, but need to get their European campaign back in track. Spurs were beaten 3-2 at Galatasaray in their last Europa League fixture, with the North Londoners reduced to 10 men in a hostile atmosphere in Turkey.

Roma persuaded Claudio Ranieri out of retirement this month and the 73-year-old has returned to the dugout at the Stadio Olimpico for a third time. The former Leicester manager will be aiming to turn around their fortunes after a disappointing start to the campaign.

Spurs were dealt a mammoth injury blow on Monday night amid the news goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario required surgery on a fractured ankle.

The Italian stopper sustained the injury during Saturday’s game against Manchester City and the 28-year-old played over half of the game with the fracture.

Vicario joins key defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven on the treatment table, but Rodrigo Bentancur will be available as his seven-match suspension does not apply to European matches. Will Lankshear is suspended after his red card against Galatasaray.

Ranieri has almost full squad at his disposal, with only Eldor Shomurodov and Alexis Saelemaekers expected to miss out for Roma.

Spurs proved to be Manchester City’s nemesis once again as they thrashed City 4-0 at the Etihad on Saturday evening.

James Maddison netted a brace on his 28th birthday before Pedro Porro finished a flowing move against his former club. Brennan Johnson came off the bench to complete the rout late on.

However, Spurs are still searching for consistency. Prior to the international break, they gifted Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town their first Premier League wins of the season with poor performances.

The Lilywhites have scored more goals than any other team in the Premier League and are capable of dismantling teams at their best. However, finding that standard on a regular basis has been problematic for Postecoglou.

Ranieri’s return to Roma didn’t have the fairytale outcome as the capital club lost to Serie A leaders Napoli at the weekend.

Romelu Lukaku, who scored 21 goals on loan at Roma last season, netted the decisive goal against his former club to condemn I Giallorossi to their third successive league defeat.

Under previous manager Ivan Juric, the Italian side underperformed in the Europa League and have collected just five points from four games.

Following a draw to Athletic Club, Roma suffered a shock defeat to Elfsborg in their second game. The Italians then narrowly beat Dinamo Kyiv before earning a point at Union St. Gilloise.

Roma have won just two of their last 10 games, prompting the decision to relieve previous manager Juric of his duties.
