Inconsistent Spurs need to improve

Spurs were fortunate to come through their cup tie on Wednesday as they scored two late goals to see off Championship outfit Coventry City 2-1.

It was a much-needed win for Ange Postecoglou following back-to-back defeats in the league against Newcastle and Arsenal, and now his side host the Bees, who have won two and lost two in the top flight this season to leave them ninth in the table.

Last week’s North London derby loss means Postecoglou is under pressure to get a result but Brentford, who beat Leyton Orient 3-1 at home on Tuesday in the cup, are likely to provide a stern test.

Thomas Frank’s side have picked up wins over Crystal Palace and Southampton so far, while losing at Liverpool and Manchester City. However, they played well in spells at both Anfield and the Etihad to suggest they can cause Spurs problems this weekend.

Tottenham are 13th and their only win in the league was the 4-0 home hammering of Everton.

Postecoglou’s side have been criticised in the early weeks of the season for failing to take their chances, especially in the opening draw at Leicester and the 2-1 defeat at Newcastle.

Tottenham v Brentford team news

Wilson Odobert suffered what Postecoglou called a “significant” muscle injury in midweek so the winger is set to be out for at least a month.

Timo Werner is a doubt for the hosts after he was also forced off in midweek, while Richarlison is still unavailable.

Yves Bissouma could return, though, following a recent groin problem and Postecoglou is expected to bring back the likes of Son Heung-Min, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski into his starting line-up, after they were all named on the bench against Coventry.

Brentford will be without key forward Yoane Wissa, who has scored three league goals this season, after he suffered an ankle injury against Manchester City last week. Kevin Schade looks set to replace him up front.

Wissa’s absence is a major blow to Frank as he is set to be sidelined for around two months but he still has his other major goal threat, Bryan Mbeumo, to rely on, while Fabio Carvalho is in contention to start after scoring against Orient.

The visitors have a lengthy injury list with Josh Dasilva, Mathias Jensen, Gustavo Nunes, Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry among those still on the sidelines.
