Tottenham Hotspur are in desperate need of a Premier League win. Having struggled for consistency this season, they have lacked the momentum they enjoyed last year.
After a promising start under manager Ange Postecoglou, injuries and inconsistency have taken their toll this season.
Thursday’s 3-0 Europa League win over Elfsborg provided some respite, with academy prospects Mikey Moore, Dane Scarlett and Damola Ajayi stepping up in the absence of key first-team players.
However, Tottenham’s domestic form tells a different story.
Last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Leicester City was a new low. Spurs had not lost to a team on a seven-game losing streak since 1912.
The result left them languishing in 15th place, eight points above the relegation zone and a staggering 17 adrift of the top four.
They now risk suffering five consecutive league defeats for the first time in over two decades.
Postecoglou could become the first Tottenham manager since Osvaldo Ardiles in 1994 to endure such a run.
Injuries have undoubtedly played a part in their struggles.
Micky van de Ven returned in midweek, but Tottenham are still without several key players, including Guglielmo Vicario, Brennan Johnson and Destiny Udogie.
There is no guarantee their returns will instantly lift the team.Brentford will not offer an easy route back to form. Thomas Frank’s side have a strong home record and have already beaten Tottenham this season. The Bees’ well-organised, physical approach has caused problems for many opponents, and they will relish the opportunity to deepen Spurs’ crisis.Postecoglou has maintained a defiant stance, insisting the club’s long-term progress outweighs short-term setbacks. But patience in football is rarely unlimited, and results dictate narratives.Tottenham need a statement performance on Sunday. Anything less, and the slide will continue.
