Rocco went viral for his message to the Liverpool captain ahead of kick-off
A Tottenham mascot who urged Virgil van Dijk to join his side has jokingly apologised after the Carabao Cup win over Liverpool.
Rocco went viral ahead of the first leg between Spurs and Liverpool on Wednesday night for his comments in the tunnel before kick-off.
Lined up with the rest of the mascots, he had a message for the Liverpool captain, who had a smile on his face as he made his way back to the dressing room.
Rocco shouted: "Van Dijk, come to Tottenham! We haven't got any good defenders at the moment!”
Spurs’ injury problems at the back have meant Archie Gray has had to deputise alongside Radu Dragusin in recent matches, with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero remaining on the sidelines.
However, the centre-back pair impressed in the first leg of the semi-final tie, keeping a rare clean sheet as Spurs earned a 1-0 win to take to Anfield for the return fixture next month.
Speaking to talkSPORT after the match, Rocco’s dad Charlie joked his son had made a “big mistake” in downplaying Gray and Dragusin.
"He's in the back of the car and he's got his tail between his legs," he said.
"He was convinced that he did enough to get Van Dijk to sign for us. But about 60 minutes into the game he realised he made a big mistake and he knew that we only need [Radu] Dragusin and Archie Gray to see us through, what a performance."
Rocco added: “So, I just wanted to apologise for what I said earlier.
"I'm sorry for my actions because we've got Archie Gray and Radu Dragusin!"
