Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a significant setback in their pre-season preparations after James Maddison suffered a major injury during their 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in South Korea. The England midfielder, who had only recently returned from a previous knee issue, was forced off just nine minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute.
There was a palpable sense of concern among players and staff as Maddison, visibly distressed, was stretchered off the pitch. Photographs later showed the 27-year-old departing the stadium on crutches, sparking fears over another prolonged absence.
Spurs manager Thomas Frank, who recently replaced Ange Postecoglou at the helm, did not sugar-coat the situation post-match. “It is a bad injury. Brutal,” Frank told reporters. His comments echoed the apprehension shared by fans and pundits alike, who will be all too aware of Maddison’s recent struggles with knee issues.
The timing of this latest setback could not be more frustrating for Tottenham Hotspur. Maddison had already missed the closing weeks of last season due to an injury in the same knee, which ruled him out of critical fixtures including Spurs’ victorious Europa League final.
Frank’s reign at Tottenham is only just beginning, but the loss of one of his most creative players throws up early challenges. Maddison is not just a marquee name but a central figure in the way Spurs want to play — progressive, incisive and always capable of producing something from nothing.
While the extent of the damage remains to be confirmed through medical scans back in London, early signs suggest the midfielder is facing another spell on the sidelines. With the Premier League campaign fast approaching, Maddison’s absence could necessitate a tactical rethink or a move in the transfer market.
For Maddison himself, this injury raises worrying questions about the long-term condition of his knee.
Such recurring problems have not only interrupted his club form but also his chances with the national team. Gareth Southgate had previously noted Maddison’s creative value, but persistent injuries may affect his future England involvement.
With Maddison now sidelined, attention turns to who can fill the void. Tottenham Hotspur still have the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma, but neither offer quite the same vision and technical craft in the final third. Whether Frank leans on internal options or urges the club to act in the transfer market could define the early phase of his tenure.
Tottenham supporters will now anxiously await official updates, hoping that Maddison’s injury is not as severe as initially feared. Either way, his condition will undoubtedly influence how Spurs shape up for what promises to be a demanding campaign under their new manager.
