Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly submitted an offer worth £70 million in total for Bryan Mbeumo – £10 million more than Manchester United’s bid for the Brentford winger.

Mbeumo, 25, has emerged as a key target for United this summer as the club searches for reinforcements to bolster Ruben Amorim’s forward line.

The Cameroon international has enjoyed the best season of his career, scoring 20 goals and providing eight assists in the Premier League for Brentford. Only Mohammed Salah, Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland scored more, underscoring the impressive campaign Mbeumo has produced at the Gtech Community Stadium.

United, by comparison, have endured their worst season in the Premier League era with only four clubs having scored fewer goals than Amorim’s side this year – Everton and the three relegated teams, Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton.

It’s evident, therefore, why the Red Devils are prioritising a move for Mbeumo, having already tabled an opening offer worth £55 million (£45m up front with £10m in add-ons).

This was rejected by Brentford, however, who are holding out for a fee in excess of £60 million, citing United’s £62.5 million capture of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ forward Matheus Cunha as the benchmark which must be reached to sanction Mbeumo’s departure.

The Mirror reports the Reds second offer, worth “worth £55million plus £5million in add-ons”, was also rejected by the Bees.

But United now risk losing out on another key target to a Premier League rival, having already seen Liam Delap choose Stamford Bridge over Old Trafford, as the report reveals Spurs have “launched a £70million bid to hijack” the deal for Mbeumo.

“The north Londoners’ offer is worth £65million plus £5million in add-ons, £10million more than United’s. As revealed by Mirror Football last week, new Spurs boss Thomas Frank wants to take 25-year-old Mbeumo with him to north London. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy wants to deliver the Cameroon international as a statement signing for Ange Postecoglu’s successor.”

The Mirror contends United remain Mbeumo’s “preferred destination” but “Frank wants to try and tempt him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with the prospect of a reunion and Champions League football.”

The report also states the financial package available at Old Trafford far exceeds the one Spurs’ wage structure will allow them to offer Mbeumo.

But while United may retain advantages in negotiations with Mbeumo, their North London rivals now have the upper hand in talks with Brentford as they have met the Bees’ valuation of their talismanic attacker. And club-to-club agreements are always more important than player-to-club ones.
