Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has signed a new four-year contract.

The Argentina international had two years left on his existing deal but has now extended his stay in north London.

Romero’s decision is a boost to manager Thomas Frank, who made him captain earlier this month following Heung-min Son’s departure to Los Angeles FC.

The 27-year-old was linked with Atletico Madrid earlier in the summer and had previously spoken of a desire to play in La Liga.

Atletico ended their pursuit in July, believing Spurs were intent on securing a renewal for their defender.

Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021, initially on loan before completing a £47 million permanent move.

He has subsequently established himself as one of the Premier League’s most accomplished centre-backs.

Romero was pivotal in their Europa League triumph under Ange Postecoglou, winning Player of the Match in the final and being named the competition’s Player of the Season.

He was also included in the Europa League Team of the Season alongside three Tottenham teammates.

Romero was appointed vice-captain in 2023 and stepped up as leader during the closing stages of last season.

Frank confirmed him as club captain ahead of the UEFA Super Cup tie against Paris Saint-Germain, a game Spurs lost on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

The new manager has described Romero as ‘very, very committed’ and central to his plans.

Romero has already demonstrated his importance this term, excelling in the 3-0 Premier League victory over Burnley and showcasing his passing range in the build-up to Brennan Johnson’s goal.

He is expected to form the defensive foundation of Frank’s side alongside Micky van de Ven, who also committed to a new contract earlier this summer.

Romero has won 44 caps for Argentina and was part of the squad that lifted the 2022 World Cup. He has also claimed two Copa America titles.

His new contract underlines Tottenham’s ambition to compete on all fronts as they enter a new era under Frank.
