Even though Toni Kroos retired from professional football at the end of the 2023/24 season, he still follows the daily business very closely. At the indoor football league “Icon League”, Kroos gave his thoughts on his former Germany teammate Florian Wirtz and his pending transfer to Liverpool:
“If he thinks thats the best next step for him and his career, then that's good. You can technically only judge decisions like this afterwards, of course.”
Toni Kroos, just like Florian Wirtz, broke through at Leverkusen, where he was on loan from Bayern Munich for the second half of the 2008/09 and the 2009/10 season. Back then, he played 48 games for die Werkself and was involved in 23 goals (10 goals, 13 assists).
While Kroos managed to become one of the best players in the world at Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, Wirtz is now very likely going to join Liverpool in the Premier League, where Kroos never played in his career.
“He [Wirtz] is a player who can prevail at any club in the world in my opinion. It doesn't matter if it would've been Bayern or Liverpool, it's different from being at Leverkusen for sure - but he has all the tools to assert himself at any given top club.”
Liverpool's most recent reported offer for Florian Wirtz stands at €100 million excluding any additional payments; Leverkusen are supposedly set at demanding a fee in the region of €130 million, meaning that this transfer saga could continue for the time being.
