Todd Cantwell’s Rangers exit nears as Saudis move in

The rumbles of Todd Cantwell leaving Rangers have hugely increased the past week, after the gaffe-ridden playmaker’s agent Jose Enrique accidentally offered him to Lecce, before it emerged that James Bisgrove’s new Saudi Arabian mob Al Qadsiah FC also want Cantwell, having just been promoted in the Premier League.

Wisely, for once, Cantwell has been avoiding social media, avoiding the recent calamities on that platform which have done him such a huge disservice, keeping notably quiet in recent days keeping clear of the same nonsense that caused uproar.

And his conspicuous silence has we guess fuelled in part the speculation that he is on his way out – his agent’s action definitively didn’t help, and now Bisgrove’s new gig are credited with an interest.

Why would Saudi suit Cantwell?

In truth, to play for Rangers you have to have a particular mentality – it is no surprise that post-Walter, the most ‘controversial’ players at Rangers have been the ‘colourful’ personalities, the ones spouting rubbish on social media – look back at Josh Windass, Alfredo Morelos and Todd Cantwell.

These players weren’t naturally winners in pressured situations like Rangers (Morelos had won the title in Finland of course) and their personalities clashed with the high demands.

Cantwell is another of this ilk, and hasn’t shone when the pressure has been on – shone when it wasn’t in second half of 22/23.

And Saudi, for Qassiah, as a newly-promoted team, the pressure is just to stay in the top flight.

In fairness, we’re pretty sure Cantwell has been relegated with Norwich so that might not suit him that well either.

Either way, there’s a lot of interest in him, and there seems a will on his (and his agent’s) part for him to find a new gig.
