England should have been ahead at the break but eventually took the lead on 62 minutes, Harvey Elliott with an excellent goal, a rare strike with his right foot.

Ten minutes later though and the Dutch were level, Cresswell at fault.

Just when it looked to be heading for extra-time, Harvey Elliott with another very good strike with five minutes of normal time to go, this time with his favoured left foot.

In hot conditions, England coping really well and deserved winners, having more shots (12 v 6), more efforts on target (4 v 3) and more touches in the opposition box (29 v 20).

Having played at left-back in earlier games this tournament, Tino Livramento played on his favoured right side today, starting and playing the full match.

The Newcastle United star playing his part on a day when all the England team did well.

I haven’t seen who the official man of the match has been announced as, but an easy decision surely, with match winner Harvey Elliott getting the two England goals on top of a very good all round display.

Ahead of England’s semi-final today. BBC Sport asked the question – How important is winning U21 Euros to future senior success?

BBC Sport report– 25 June 2025:

How important is winning U21 Euros to senior success?

England are just two games from making it back-to-back European Under-21 Championship triumphs.

Lee Carsley’s side, who won the tournament in 2023, face the Netherlands in the semi-final of this year’s competition on Wednesday (17:00 BST).

Germany play France in the other semi at 20:00.

But how important is winning the competition? What do the winners usually go on to do?

Do the winners go on to have senior success? Of the 24 teams to win the European Under-21 Championship, 10 of them have gone on to win either the World Cup or the senior Euros in the next 12 years.

Nine of those have featured players from that successful U21 squad.

Of course there is still time for Germany, winners in 2017 and 2021, and England in 2023 to do so.

Another five have reached a final in that time frame but lost.

1994, 1996, 2000 and 2004 Italy (2006 World Cup)

2009 Germany (2014 World Cup)

2011 Spain (Euro 2012)

2013, 2019 Spain (Euro 2024)
