As previously reported, Bayern Munich are keen to extend Thomas Müller’s contract at the club. Müller’s deal is set to expire in the summer, and with some of Europe’s elite clubs, such as Manchester United, considering swooping in for the 34-year-old, Der Rekordmeister will be required to act quickly.
However, after announcing the extension of Manuel Neuer’s deal at the club, it is expected that certain demands will be made by Müller. After spending almost a year on the sidelines through injury, Neuer recently signed a new contract with the record champions, which is believed to earn the Bayern shot-stopper an annual salary of €20 million.
Therefore, according to Bild, if Müller is to remain in Bavaria, then a similar salary will have to be agreed upon. Otherwise, Müller will look to leave the club in the summer, with ambitions of signing for a club competing in the Champions League.
Nevertheless, it is expected that the two parties will come to an agreement in the near future. Speaking to Bild TV last Sunday, Bayern president Herbert Hainer spoke about his desire for Müller to remain at the club: “We are having discussions with him; I am also confident, and I really hope that Thomas will stay with us.”
While the 34-year-old may not be receiving consistent game time under Thomas Tuchel, largely due to the genius of Jamal Musiala, there is still a lot that Müller brings to the side. The experience he provides, as well as the quality he still possesses, means that Bayern should look to do whatever they can to prevent Müller from departing.
