One former Arsenal and Chelsea player has revealed the reasons as to why hit quit The Gunners to make the switch to London rivals Chelsea.
When it comes to breaking promises to players, that is not something that is recommended. Players need to feel valued and wanted. So when you promise them something and then do not go through with it, is is never going to end in a good way. And in this particular situation, it ended in an Arsenal player joining a close London rival and becoming hated by the fans of his former club.
It’s not the first time this has happened though, and we have seen many recent examples of players making that same switch. Kai Havertz recently went in the other direction from Chelsea to Arsenal, as did William Gallas back in the day. But by far, Chelsea got the best of all of these all times transfer switches.
If you don’t know by now then you should know, that I am clearly talking about one of the best ever left backs to ever grace the sport, and one of the best players to ever play for Chelsea and England, Blues legend Ashley Cole!
It sounds like Cole was going to be staying at Arsenal and signing a new contract there. However, according to Cole himself, the club moved the goalposts and he decided to go to Chelsea as a result.
In quotes picked up on X today, Cole says:
“My situation was I knew what I was worth. If you don’t want to pay it, no problem. But we did agree to pay it.
Everything was agreed and then they pulled the rug [from] under me. They broke their promise – I couldn’t tell you why.”
