Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will try to bring in a unique attacking player in the next two windows and he also wants a young defensive midfielder, according to the Times.

The Spaniard agreed a new three-year contract at the North London club yesterday and he wants to upgrade every area of his squad to boost their chances of winning major silverware going forward.

Signing a striker has always been a top priority for Arsenal, and it is no news they still want to bolster their attack despite signing England international forward Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea on summer transfer deadline day.

The Gunners also signed Spain international defensive midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad in the summer, and it could surprise some fans that Arteta now wants a young defensive midfielder.

Arsenal already have 25-year-old Declan Rice in their ranks, while the summer arrival is 28, but Arteta is already preparing for the future as 32-year-old Jorginho is expected to move on at the end of the campaign.

As a result, a younger option is needed in defensive midfield, and the Gunners would look to land an addition in the position next summer.

Arteta targeted RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams and Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala in the summer, and it is no coincidence that all are aged 22 or younger.

Arsenal have one of the youngest average starting XIs in the Premier League and they want to maintain it going forward.

The North Londoners want more elite players capable of taking their team to the next level, and they will look to keep making quality recruitment in order to keep challenging for the big trophies.

Arteta has won one FA Cup and two FA Community Shields since becoming Arsenal manager in December 2019, and bagging plenty of Premier League and Champions League titles will be on his mind.
